Fifi Takes a Bath
Teaching pre schoolers is never ever boring. Case in point. During 'crayon time' I was asking my students for ideas of what to draw in order to further instigate listening skills, working together, and cause and effect. Here is the conversation and the product that followed. For blog purposes, I have changed the names of my two and three year old students.
Emily: Make a dog!
Amy : She should be a poodle!
Olivia : She should be named Fifi!
Amy : She has curly hair
Elizabeth: She's a princess
Me : What does a princess poodle look like?
Amy : She needs a crown!
Olivia : a sparkle crown
Me: What color?
Olivia: Blue
Matthew: She needs a bath. Make a bathtub!
Kevin: With bubbles. Lots of bubbles.
Amy: She likes toys in her bath
Me: What kind of toys
Olivia: A dinosaur
Me: (I start drawing a dinosaur)
Olivia: No, a horse!
Me: (I turn the dinosaur into a horse)
Olivia: No, actually a giraffe!
Me: (I turn the dino-horse into a quick giraffe)
Matthew: And she needs a rubber duckie
Amy: She should have red shoes
Olivia: Yeah, like Mommy shoes
Elizabeth: Wizard of Oz shoes
This is what ended up being drawn--

The story that they created together after the drawing was finished was really very entertaining. It involved Fifi the Poodle (who happens to live on the Upper West Side) taking a walk in Central Park, playing ball with her dog friends, and getting muddy. I won't go into all the details but it was very creative and entertaining. Perhaps some day I'll write my own children's book!
Also, I thought this drawing (by 2 year old Matthew) was rather advanced. I love how he chose two crayons and used them at the same time (black and purple). He asked me to write the title for him. His picture is called 'Man With No Face'.

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!
